Issue #23

Welcome to Issue #23 of Sonic Postcards!

The featured track this week comes from the late Pastor Wylie Champion. When I first heard, “Who Do Men Say I Am,” the rawness of it made me think I was listening to a record from 50 or 60 years ago. Amazingly, the track came off of a 2018 recording and was just released last month.

“Who Do Men Say I Am,”, along with the rest of the I Just Want to Be a Good Man album was recorded at the 37th Street Baptist Church in Oakland over two evenings. In contrast to howe most albums are recorded now, the album was recorded as a live performance with the entire band. This is what lends the album its beautifully unpolished and raw feel.

I would be fumbling over my words trying to provide a proper write-up on the project and its two collaborators, Pastor Champion and Luaka Bop. Accordingly, I highly recommend checking out the project website where you can can learn more about Pastor Champion, his life, and his music.

That’s it for this week. Happy listening.
