I absolutely hated California when we moved here 4 years ago. Between the fires, traffic, cost of living, sheer amount of people, and the rampant never ending battle to keep up with the Joneses, there is a lot to dislike. However, bit by bit that disdain has been eroded and replaced it with, dare I say, love for parts of it. Especially in Spring.
One of the last remaining dislikes is the lack of public land compared to other western states like Colorado, Utah, and Oregon. When we drive places my mind likes to wander and imagine exploring the surrounding hill sides on foot, bike, or skis. If it is a drive we do often, my curiosity runs wild and some of those places turn into an obsession.
In states like Colorado, the land on either side of the road that I am dreaming about tends to be public. Given enough time and a little effort, you can return and see how the reality stacks up against your mental wanderings.
In California, however, there is a good chance that land is private. As a result, a lot of my roadside daydreams die on the vine. It feels weird being surrounded by such beautiful land and knowing that unless I am willing to trespass on a frequent basis, there is no way to explore it.
Public lands are a gift. So is a music.
Happy listening.
