Looking for new music? Love art? Every week I create a short, five track playlist of the songs I am feeling at the moment along with a beautiful, found postcard. It’s a spark of joy for your eyes and ears.
I got ahead of myself with the last issue and called it #90…it was really #89. Here’s the real #90.
During my freshmen year of high school, a senior on the cross country team lent me his external hard drive with over 120 GB of music. It felt like getting a sonic version of the Library of Alexandria. Most of the artists were unknown to me - groups like Sound Tribe Sector 9, Lotus, Belle and Sebastian, Radiohead, Boards of Canada, A Tribe Called Quest, Sufjan Stevens, The Fugees, Talib Kwelli, and Sigur Rós.
That hard drive became the bedrock of my obsession with music and formed the foundation of my tastes today. I would walk or take the bus anywhere I could because it meant I could don my giant over ear Koss Headphones and spend hours exploring these new-to-me artists on my iPod.
Today’s playlist is a nod to that experience. Find some over the ear headphones, turn them up, go for a long walk, and let the textures wash over you.
p.s. the playlist closes out with a track off of McKinley Dixon’s Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?. I cannot recommend listening to this album start to finish enough.
